How Intellectual Property Leaks Affect Business Innovation, Financial Stability, and Competitive Advantage

Intellectual Property Leaks

The long-term ramifications of leaks private or IP information can impact business innovation, financial stability and competitive advantage. Businesses of all sizes need an approach to detect and react quickly against these kinds of attacks to stay ahead of their competitors, limit the impact on their bottom line, and restore their image after a damaging event.

Intellectual property is broad term that refers to the humans, like inventions, literary and artistic works. It also encompasses names, symbols or designs employed in commerce. On an even more practical scale, intellectual property includes private information that gives companies an advantage in competitive markets like business processes, computer programs manufacturing methods, and client lists.

These assets are usually intangible and their value is not always quantified or acknowledged. However they are still vital assets for businesses that must be safeguarded. In the past, criminals would have had to steal physical items like a client list or blueprint in order to steal intellectual property. However, thanks to digitalization, cybercriminals can now easily and cost-effectively steal these valuable assets.

Human error is at the root of many of these crimes, for example, sending confidential documents to the wrong person, or the loss of a device containing sensitive information. Others are deliberate, and the motives are usually monetary. Semiconductor producers, for instance could face severe fines if they publish their IP outside of the country without a deemed export license. A complete IP lifecycle solution, such as Helix IPLM, can mitigate these risks and prevent leakage of sensitive information.
